Hector’s Story Pt II; The Evil Sticker

Seems innocent enough doesn’t it? The writing on this sticker says “it’s not difficult to love me”. But look at the sticker. This sticker above is either a tiger or a cat. How would you describe it? It’s not a kitty or a passive cat. It has an evil look to it. I know, I can hear you now. Another conspiracy theory. But wait, hear me out.
When I took this home and began writing the story my 11-year-old daughter came in and I asked her about the sticker. Understand that in Guatemala, stickers are big deals and hot items for the kids. I frequently bring stickers from the United States and they love them. Once I brought a bunch of Y2K stickers for the year 2000 that were four years old, that is to say four years after 2000. And they loved them! What is on the sticker is not important. My daughter told me they come free in the bags of potato chips at the local “tiendas” or markets. The kids here frequently get a bag or two of these every day in place of a meal. My daughter left and brought back one of her school notebooks which had a sticker on it. The message was “Yes I love you very much” with another evil looking cat.
I asked her if she had more but she said no. Knowing that she eats these chips several times a week I asked her why she didn’t have more and she said she thought the cats looked evil. She then told me that a particular woman was selling just the stickers by the gross. We have looked for her several times but she is not around anymore. And now the stickers have been replaced by another kid’s toy inside the bags of chips. But back to Raquel.
With the new direction to collect the stickers Raquel began talking to the neighborhood kids. She told them that she would buy or trade for as many stickers as they could bring her. A steady line of kids would come to the house to sell or trade for an orange from the orange tree for any number of stickers. And soon Raquel had these two notebooks filled with the stickers; row after row, page after page of stickers.
While I don’t understand the significance of the stickers there has to be some. Hector said that some of the stickers said things like “adopt me and you can have anything” and “if you love me I can help you”. When I asked Raquel the significance of the stickers she just reiterated it was a commitment to Satan and the reinforcement of Satan’s written word in the messages.
The voice continued speaking instructions to Raquel, telling her to do more and more things. One of the things was to put black shoe polish in her hair, which was already jet black. But the voice told her that she was getting more and more beautiful. And the marks she was getting in school continued to be good.
I asked her once again if she had at any point experienced fear and again she told me no. I was somewhat amazed to hear this story and her deepening involvement in this evil without the least bit of fear or concern.
Then something unexplainable happened. Two weeks before this interview at approximately 3:30 in the morning Raquel was awakened by the voice. He told her to get up and start walking. Without collecting her shoes or changing out of her bed clothes she began walking.
I asked her if she knew where she was going and she said no, she just was told to walk. Again I asked her if she was afraid and she said no. She continued.
She walked some distance, about 15 minutes and found herself at the cemetery outside of Panajachel. Remember, it’s 3:30 in the morning and she is at a cemetery unafraid. When she arrives at the cemetery she sees one of her dogs from home just sitting and waiting for her. The dog immediately joined her and they began walking together. About 45 minutes later she arrives at the friend’s house who brought her into this group. Again she tells me she didn’t set out to go to the house, she just was there. She calls her friend on her cell phone from outside the house and her friend lets her in. They retire to the friends room where they sleep until approximately 6:30 a.m.
Raquel is awakened to the noise of the parents (witches) of her friend praying outside the room. She is startled when her phone rings but even more so when she sees that it is a call from home, which she chooses not to answer.
Back home her mother has discovered that Raquel is not in her room. She has woken the rest of the family and they are making phone calls and searching for Raquel but nobody knows where she is. Calls to her cell phone go unanswered and the concern is growing. The decision is made to call the police if they cannot locate her by 9 a.m. One last attempt is made by phone to contact her and to their surprise, she answers.
Back at the witches house the prayers have ended and breakfast has been made. Raquel sits at the table for breakfast with the witch family and finds a large bottle of whiskey included with the breakfast. Without explanation she drinks a lot, sufficient to get her drunk. And then from the bedroom she hears her phone ringing. And for some reason at this time she answered it.
The family quickly gathered around Raquel’s brother, Hosea as he asked her where she was. Her speaking was not clear and he was confused when she wouldn’t answer him directly. Hector took the phone and told her to tell him where she was, it wasn’t important why she was there only that he would come and get her directly. Again she refused but stated that she would borrow some money and take a taxi home. She appeared to be drunk to Hector but there was nothing more that could be done except wait for her to arrive.
